Some examples of projects done in the past include: construction and installation of bench sites along the trail and in day use areas, cleanups and debris-clearing projects, special event assistance, and trail maintenance. Groups can volunteer once or long-term.

Pocahontas State Park is looking for individuals and/or groups to split firewood at the park. A gas powered log splitter will be provided along with a staff member to assist in the project. The firewood is sold in our park and all proceeds go to the Friends of Pocahontas and helps to provide funding for special projects or materials at our park. This project is open to individuals as well as groups. Minors may not operate the woodsplitters but still may be of assistance.

The mission of the Invasive Species Control Squad is to assist Virginia State Park staff in controlling invasive plants on state park property. Participants can help with: manual control (with and without power tools), assist park staff with herbicide treatment, assist with session logistics, document activity, locate and document species occurrence, and perform follow-up monitoring. Any Pocahontas State Park volunteer may help; minors must be accompanied by an adult. Please contact the Volunteer Coordinator for information on locations and dates of activity.
Provide interpretive tours or educational programs related to plants, wildlife, or natural history of the park. Volunteers may help interpreters with park programs and activities, including campfire talks, nature hikes, educational wildlife games for children, and caring for small animals, such as turtles, kept onsite in tanks and cages. Specific Duties: Work cooperatively with Chief Ranger, Interpretive Program Manager, and/or Park Volunteer Coordinator for scheduling tours or special environmentally related programs. Provide tours/programs alone or with another interpreter or park staff. May help develop tours/programs if information and format is not already established. Assist visitors and give directions to park facilities and nearby attractions. Report monthly volunteer hours to Park Volunteer Coordinator.
