2016 Health Fair Assistant - Fairland Sports and Aquatics Center

Location: Sports, Health and Wellness Division

Volunteers, ages 15 and up, are being recruited for Fairland Sports and Aquatics Center 9th Annual Health Fair "Delivering Inclusive Solutions for Total Body Health". This fair is totally interactive with free classes, health screenings, arts & crafts, healthy cooking demonstrations, etc. throughout the day.

Volunteers are needed to assist with activities during this event. Each volunteer will be trained at a particular station where they will assist the leader by helping with set-up, sign-ups, crowd control, give directions and offer assistance where needed.

There are two times for volunteer service: Friday, May 13, 3 -9 amand Saturday, May 14, 7 am- 5 pm.

Adopt-A-Trail Partner - Anacostia Trail System: Northeast Branch Trail 1

Location: The Park Ranger Office

Show commitment to the future of our parks and trails by adopting a section of a trail. Adopt-A-Trail is part of the Partners 'n Parks program where groups can help the environment by reducing litter and maintaining trails for future enjoyment, while experiencing fun in the outdoors and being actively involved in a community project. Adopt-A-Trail partners will have their efforts recognized with signage along the adopted portion of the trail.

Anacostia River Clean-Up Assistant 2016

Location: Bladensburg Waterfront Park

Volunteers, ages 13 and up, are needed to help beautify the Anacostia River by collecting floating debris and trash. Some volunteers will be transported down river by boat. Others will clean-up the area near the park. Volunteers who are ages 16 and over may have the optionto use a canoe to clean the river.

Volunteers are required to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and alife vest (provided). Volunteers are encouraged towear long pants and to bring a change of clothes and shoes.Bring a reusable water bottle. We suggest bringing plastic kitchen gloves that go past your wrist. We will provide latex gloves. Please have a way tosecure your keys andphone. Wet bags are suggested.

River Clean-ups are 9:00 am - 12:30 pm on the following 2016dates: May 28, June 26,July 30, August 27, September4 and October 8.

This volunteer opportunity is eligible for Prince George's County Public Schools student service learning hours.

Community Center Aide - Deerfield Run Community Center

Location: Deerfield Run Community Center

Volunteers, ages 16 and up, are needed to assist with developing, planning, promoting, implementing and reviewing a wide range of community programs at Deerfield Run Community Center.Volunteers may assist with organizing the monthly newsletter, designing bulletin boards, promoting community news and checking attendance of community programs. Individuals will volunteer as part of a team.

Earth Day 2016 Anacostia River Clean-Up Assistant

Location: Bladensburg Waterfront Park

The Anacostia Watershed Society, in partnership with the Department of Parks and Recreation Bladensburg Waterfront Park, is hosting a special Earth Day Anacostia River Clean-up on Saturday, April 23, 2016, 8:30 am - noon.A volunteer celebration will follow the clean up. Garden Aide - Riversdale

Location: Riversdale House Museum

Volunteers, ages 18 and up,are needed toassist the head gardener in planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, etc. Riversdale is home to a beautiful garden abundant in flowers, fruits, vegetables, and herbs. This is a fun opportunity to learn about gardening on the grounds of a restored, early 19th century manor house. Scheduling is flexible on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Garden aide positions are also available on Sundays and for special events. Garden aides work hand in hand with the Kitchen Guild and Riversdale's head gardener to interpret our kitchen and historical gardens.

Girl Scout Gold Award Project

Location: The Park Ranger Office

The Girl Scouts of America Gold Award is the highest honor that can be attained by a Girl Scout. Complete your Gold Award project with the guidance of a Park Ranger. Previous projects have included boardwalk construction, trail maintenance and signage, and construction of wildlife nesting boxes.

History Interpreters and Docents

Location: Bladensburg Waterfront Park

Gain knowledge ofthe War of 1812andthe history of our area. Help at the information counter in the Battle of Bladensburg Visitor Center-(18 & up) or assistwith programs and activities and/or on theinterpretive pontoon boat tours. Training provided.

Ice Rink Musicians - Herbert Wells Ice Rink

Location: Sports, Health and Wellness Division

Talented, family-oriented musicians are being recruited to volunteer to play during the Sunday Skate Sessions from 1:30 - 3:30 pm at the Herbert Wells Ice Rink in College Park, an outdoor skating facility. The facility will provide the space. Performers will provide their own equipment and set-up needs. Acoustic performances are welcome! This is a great opportunity to play for free and promote your musical talents.

Museum Admission & Gift Shop Sales Assistant - College Park Aviation Museum

Location: College Park Aviation Museum

Volunteers, ages 16 and up, are being recruited to assist staff with greeting the public, collecting museum admission fees and providing customer service including answering questions about the museum, selling gift shop items and more. Volunteers will use a computer for admission and gift shop sales. Volunteers will also help with other tasks such as answering phones and helping with mailings.

Volunteers, ages 13 and up, are being recruited to assist center staff with the development, publicizing and implementation of special events and programs at Rollingcrest Chillum Community Center.Volunteers may assist with handing out fliers, designing bulletin boards, promoting community news, setting up and breaking down events, and checking attendance of community programs. Volunteers must have good customer service skills and enjoy working events and working with the public. Individuals will volunteer as part of a team.

Service Organization Mentor - Kentland Communty Center

Location: Kentland Community Center

Members of fraternal and service organizations, ages 21 and up, with prior approval of the center director, mayapply to assist with the delivery of youth programs and services. Volunteer responsibilities will includementoring (academically, socially, and professionally) pre-teens and teens, assisting with clothing drives and other service projects, and chaperoning field trips. Volunteer hours will be assigned as needed.

Stream Savers

Location: The Park Ranger Office

Volunteers, ages 13 and up, assist staff in maintaining local streams, ponds, and rivers through ongoing clean-up projects on the Anacostia, Patuxent and Potomac Rivers and local watersheds. Volunteers also assist Park Rangers with stream health assessments by identifying living organisms, which act as indicator species. Training is provided and training and project schedules vary by location needs.
